The Apollo Bay Football Netball Club, known as the Hawks, is one of the most iconic and picturesque clubs in the Colac & District Football Netball League (CDFNL). Nestled along the stunning Great Ocean Road, the club has long been a central part of community life in Apollo Bay, with a rich history that stretches back nearly a century.

🏉 Early Beginnings

While the club officially joined the Polwarth Football League in 1935 under the name Apollo Bay Football Club, football had been played in the town well before that in local and social competitions. These early matches laid the groundwork for a structured football program in the town, uniting locals around the spirit of competition and camaraderie.

🔄 Transition to the CDFNL

In 1972, following the disbandment of the Polwarth Football League, Apollo Bay joined the Colac & District Football League (now CDFNL). Alongside other clubs such as Birregurra, Forrest, and Lorne, the Hawks embraced a new era of football and netball in a stronger and more unified league.

🏆 Football Success

Since their transition to the CDFNL, Apollo Bay has enjoyed several successful eras, particularly throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. Their senior football premierships in the CDFNL include:

  • 1984
  • 1993
  • 1996
  • 1999
  • 2003
  • 2004

These victories highlight the club’s competitive strength and its ability to foster local football talent.

🏐 Netball Achievements

The club’s A Grade netball team claimed early success in the CDFNL with premierships in 1972 and 1973. These wins helped set a strong foundation for the club’s ongoing commitment to developing its netball program across both junior and senior grades.

🏟️ Home Ground Advantage

The Hawks proudly play at the Apollo Bay Recreation Reserve, one of the most scenic and well-known football and netball venues in the state. Located directly on the majestic Great Ocean Road, the reserve offers an unparalleled backdrop of coastal views and community atmosphere. Few clubs can boast such a stunning and visible setting for their home games.

👥 A Club for the Community

The Apollo Bay Football Netball Club is a not-for-profit organisation that exists to engage the community in local sport through an inclusive, family-friendly, and safe environment. The club’s mission is to be a sporting and social hub for the Apollo Bay district, fostering participation, community pride, and personal development for players, coaches, volunteers, and supporters alike.

In 2021, the club celebrated 50 years in the CDFNL, marking a proud milestone in its long-standing contribution to the region’s football and netball landscape.
